Lenten Journey

The season of Lent begins this week and I usually participate in the 6 week journey by making a "sacrifice" of some sort. Sometimes it's kind of a mini-denial (I gave up television for one day a week during lent), other times it's been sweets or pop. Instead of continuing with things that I honestly didn't have too much trouble giving up for 40 days, I've decided that this year I'd give up something near and dear to my heart. Meat. Not to say that I have to have meat with every meal, but I rarely go a day without eating meat. Now I'm not just talking about beef or pork, but ALL meat. No sacrifice could ever compare to the one made by Jesus, but this is my acknowledgment of what He endured for all of us. So, I'll spend the rest of my time til Wednesday preparing myself for what I pray will be a blessed journey.

Candy!!

Once again CreoleinDC inspired this post after wishing a happy birthday to one of her readers.

During the summer from ages 5-12, I went to a day camp at the school/church I attended. We would live for the moments when one of the watchers (they weren’t really counselors) would ask us to go to the store. I still remember the usual order: a can of Pepsi, plain Better Made potato chips and a pack of Kools Menthol 100s. (side note: you know this was back in the day b/c the store would actually let a bunch of kids buy cigarettes!)

The great part about making the store run was that we were allowed to keep the change and get whatever we wanted. You want to see some kids go crazy? Lol. Back then, now & laters

were 10¢ a pack so you know even if there was just a small amount of change, we still cleaned up!

Uncommitted

I wrote a couple days ago how I was never that into politics but that I was going to try and be more aware of the process, etc. And while I didn't watch the debates in NH, I didn't totally ignore what was going on (my usual m.o.) and kept my eye on the vote Tuesday. Which leads me to my next issue. Our primary is next Tuesday. However, Michigan moved our election date up a few weeks which violated the rules of the National Democratic Party causing some of the candidates to remove their names from the ballot. There are no democratic candidates (that I'm aware of) coming to Michigan and neither Edwards or Obama will appear on the ballot. (Clinton will left her name on, but won't even say boo to us). We are being encouraged to vote "uncommitted" if our candidate of choice does not appear, but what's the point? Does it benefit me and the state to vote this way? Who does stand to gain from "uncommitted"?

I'm still not sure about this. If I vote uncommitted because my candidate doesn't appear, NOT because I'm actually uncommitted, my wishes still may not be considered. Uncommitted delegates sent to the National Convention can vote for which ever democratic candidate they choose? Hmm...I don't know.

I've never been that into...

I've never been that into politics. I've never missed a general election, but I can't honestly say that I've been intimately familiar with all the candidates and their various issues. The Iowa Caucus was being discussed in one of the blogs that I read regularly and it was expressed that those that were not familiar with the electoral process were "dumb". Eh, to each his own I guess. At least people are asking questions. I was never interested in delving deeper into any one candidate because I felt at the end of the day, all of them were just telling us what they thought we wanted to hear. Dumb? maybe. I'm sure that was the thought of many people whose first time voting was in the last election, the results of which turned many people right back off of voting. This upcoming election is different. The makeup of candidates is one that has me interested in how the process will play out. Also, as part of my new determination to broaden my horizons and be more interested/ing and cultured, lol, I'm asking questions and doing my own research. Yes for the first time, but I'm doing it. So, for anyone else that didn't know, you can find out about the caucus here.

I have a few favorites: 2 versions of This Christmas, Donny Hathaway's and the Whispers, Another Lonely Christmas - Prince, Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt, Let It Snow - Boyz II Men. There are a couple others ones that my parents used to play all the time. Man, I can "hear" them in the back of my mind, but I can't place them. The only part of one I can remember is "Merry Christmas, from the Temptations" Which song is that?
